Starting a blog: What this blog is about

Val

I like to think of myself as a creative, bohemian free spirit (whether this is actually true doesn‘t really matter), who finds myself not exactly where I thought I would be at age 35. I thought I’d be baking cookies and balancing a chubby-cheeked baby on each hip. Cookies I have in abundance, but the cute little tots are nowhere to be found. And I’m no longer certain I will be able to find them. So I stand at a crossroads - not sure what is next, not sure where my heart wants to go. This blog is part of that exploration for me.

I love, love, love reading blogs! And I’ve been wanting to start one of my own for awhile now, but I took my time getting here. When I finally decided I was ready, I started thinking about “what” my blog would be “about”. I felt compelled to pick a clear, narrowly defined topic. And this has been a head scratcher, because I love so many things - food, fashion, books, film, home décor, health, self-improvement, etc - but none of them seemed right to me. My passions were difficult to pin down to just one thing.

So I decided that rather than pick just one thing, in this blog for the next year, I am planning 365 days of exploration. Partly because I think it will be fun, but also it may help me cultivate and see my passions more clearly. So I want to focus on a new project each month - some of them are small, some are challenges, some are significant things I’ve always wanted to do, and some lead me into uncharted waters.

I’ll focus on a new project each month and my goal is… GASP… to write EVERY single day. (Although I will give myself grace if meltdowns occur or periods of travel involving limited internet access!)

[Note: I reconsidered this, and have a new approach, so check out my update here!]

Some of the projects I want to tackle:
  • Starting a blog
  • Intuitive eating
  • Home makeover (in a month, are we serious?
  • Foodie challenge (or figuring out if I want to be a true foodie?)
  • Boot camp (Otherwise known as get your bootie in shape camp. I want to challenge myself to amp up my work out routine)
  • Find my passions
  • De-clutter my life (oh boy!)
  • Experiment w/ photography (maybe I should have done this before I started)
  • Try something new
  • Aspiring writer (or how I wrote the great American novel in 30 days)
  • Make some new friends
  • Write about 30 books (and/or movies) that changed my life

  1. I'm 36 and in a very similar position. Exploration is good.
