I can't do sci-fi either. All the crazy names and ways of referring to time just drive me crazy - it's too much to learn and remember just for one book.

Of course, I've got Margaret Atwood's Oryx and Crake waiting on my nightstand. We'll see if I make it anywhere with that.

I've heard many times about The Help so keep me posted on that.Amy Bhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05670335108094318249noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3264220879054830337.post-46469440382196179352010-07-02T09:22:00.843-05:002010-07-02T09:22:00.843-05:00Started reading The Windup Girl last night. The very thing that makes it exotic (multi-culti futuristic sci fi Asia) makes it feel a little choppy and hard to follow - constantly wondering what words mean and feeling baffled by the time and setting. And then, there is the poor Windup Girl. The very first scene about her was likely meant to be gritty realism depicting the way she's abused by society because she's not seen as human - but the abuse is too much for me. I'm just one of those people that can't handle - doesn't want to read - stuff about women who are abused in repulsive ways. Sorry! Onto the next book. Part of me wonders if only men write about women this way, but I'm not sure...vmichellehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15545130837372429902noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3264220879054830337.post-89590208994359437852010-07-01T21:14:31.780-05:002010-07-01T21:14:31.780-05:00I'm checking out The Windup Girl by Paolo Baci...I'm checking out The Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi - the front cover says "astute social commentary in poignant revelatory prose". So we'll see about that one... Caught my eye in a bookstore.

And then at the writer's conference last weekend I was told by at least three people that I HAD to read The Help by Kathryn Stockett. So that's on the list to check out too.vmichellehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15545130837372429902noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3264220879054830337.post-6536023414345987652010-07-01T13:17:59.946-05:002010-07-01T13:17:59.946-05:00I love these monthly greeting posts.
